DESFA launches 157-km gas pipeline to Western Macedonia

DESFA has placed into service a 157-kilometer high-pressure natural gas pipeline connecting Western Macedonia to Greece’s national transmission system, expanding gas access into several regions previously not connected to the network.

The pipeline runs from Trikala in Imathia to the Ptolemaida area, with additional branch lines serving cities including Edessa, Florina, Naousa, Veria and Skydra. DESFA said the project is intended to improve energy supply reliability while supporting economic development and industrial growth across northern Greece.

The infrastructure was designed to transport up to 100% hydrogen in the future, making it one of the first pipeline systems in Greece built with full hydrogen compatibility. The company said the design aligns with broader European decarbonization goals and positions Western Macedonia as a potential hub for future hydrogen infrastructure development.

The project carried a total investment of nearly €186 million and received support through European Union funding programs, including the Recovery and Resilience Facility. A metering station at Kardia will supply district heating systems serving Kozani, Ptolemaida and Amyntaio.

DESFA CEO Maria Sferruzza said the project expands the national gas transmission system while preparing the region for future hydrogen transportation needs. She said the infrastructure is intended to support long-term energy security, regional competitiveness and lower-emission energy development.
