Damietta Green Ammonia SAE—a joint venture between Scatec, ECHEM and MOPCO—has completed pre-FEED studies for its $873-MM green ammonia project in New Damietta, Egypt. Pre-FEED studies have been completed for the marine jetty and hydrogen plant, while FEED work on ammonia export facilities is still underway, according to ECHEM. The project is scheduled to begin operations in Q3 2028, with a planned production capacity of 150,000 tpy for export, marine fuel and industrial use.
The project is progressing through permitting, contract finalization and financing discussions, and will be powered by up to 480 MW of renewable energy, supported by a 240 MW electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen feedstock. Key commercial steps include a 2024 offtake agreement with Yara Clean Ammonia and financing discussions with the European Investment Bank. It will also integrate with MOPCO’s existing Damietta infrastructure, alongside upgrades led by thyssenkrupp Uhde to decarbonize current ammonia and urea plants through carbon capture, efficiency improvements and additional green hydrogen production.
