Hyphen to supply Namibian green ammonia through Koole Terminals

Windhoek-based developer Hyphen has signed a letter of intent with storage and logistics company Koole Terminals to supply Namibian green ammonia to Europe via a planned import terminal in the port of Rotterdam.

Hyphen plans to bring the first 1mn t/yr phase of its green ammonia project online by 2027 and double its capacity by 2029.

The company has already signed memorandums of understanding for offtake with Germany’s RWE, South Korea’s Approtium and an unnamed industrial user. The RWE offtake agreement would cover 300,000t/yr from 2027, while the other two deals account for a combined 750,000t/yr.

“This agreement represents another key milestone in our ambition of enabling Namibia’s rise as a global leader in green hydrogen production,” says Hyphen CEO Marco Raffinetti.

“The port of Rotterdam is a critical hub serving northwestern Europe and has moved rapidly to support the establishment of new green hydrogen import capacity to facilitate this regions energy transition,” he adds. “Koole Terminals is one of the most advanced import terminals under development, and we look forward to working with them to meet first supply of ammonia from our project into Europe by early 2028.”

Koole initially announced development of an import terminal and storage facilities in 2021 to receive ammonia produced by the Barents Blue project in Norway, with Norwegian firm Horisont Energi confirming it would be a “major launching customer” in a collaboration agreement signed last December.

“We are pleased to work with Hyphen to become a customer of our planned port of Rotterdam import terminal for ammonia. This cooperation will allow us to further scale-up the multimillion tonne facility,” says Koole CEO John Kraakman. The company operates 21 liquid bulk terminals across seven countries, already handling and storing ammonia.
