Shell-Eneco JV taps Ballard for fuel-cell energy storage

Crosswind, a joint venture between Shell and Dutch energy firm Eneco, has ordered a 1MW dispatchable fuel-cell power system from Ballard for integration into its 759MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore windfarm.

Crosswind plans to trial a number of methods to manage the intermittent electricity generation at the windfarm, including a floating solar park, short-term battery storage and green hydrogen produced from wind-powered electrolysis.

2024 – Ballard fuel-cell power system to be installed

“In Crosswind, we are committed to demonstrate baseload power on a megawatt-scale for a single full-scale wind turbine generator. We will introduce, for the first time, an offshore combination of battery storage and round-trip hydrogen integrated in an offshore wind farm,” says the firm’s innovation manager, Maria Kalogera.

Hollandse Kust Noord is due to come online by the end of 2023, with delivery of Ballard’s fuel-cell power system scheduled for 2024.

Ballard is also due to deliver its first order for megawatt-scale, fuel-cell dispatchable power systems this year for developer HDF’s CEOG project in French Guiana.
