Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has issued an industrial operating licence for Neom Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture between government affiliated developer Acwa, US industrial gases company Air Products and state economic zone developer Neom.
The $5bn green hydrogen and ammonia complex is expected to produce up to 1.2mn t/yr of ammonia, to be globally exported through an exclusive offtake agreement with Air Products. The US firm will also act as the plant’s EPC contractor and system integrator, and will deploy its air separation technology at the facility.
2026 – Planned startup for Neom project
The Neom Green Hydrogen Company has also contracted Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Uhde to provide a 2.2GW electrolyser for the project, while Denmark’s Topsoe will provide technology for the production of ammonia. US company Baker Hughes will provide compression technology.
The plant is due to start up in 2026. While Acwa had previously indicated it would take FID on the project before the end of 2022, it has not yet announced financial close.
