Snam-Hera Modena hydrogen hub gets €19.5mn boost

Italian energy firms Snam and Hera have received €19.5mn ($21.3mn) in funding—recently unlocked by the European Commission—from the regional government of Emiliano Romagna for a planned green hydrogen hub in Modena, Italy.

The IdrogeMO project will produce up to 400t/yr of hydrogen from an electrolyser connected to a 6MW solar farm with battery storage. The project will be sited at an exhausted landfill site, satisfying the requirement for brownfield development to access funding.

The cost of the project is estimated to total €20.8mn.

400t/yr – Planned IdrogeMO production capacity

“For Snam, IdrogeMO is the first Hydrogen Valley project dedicated to industrial applications and the transport of hydrogen, which is one of the EU's main energy transition goals,” says Stefano Venier, CEO of Snam.

“The impetus to develop Hydrogen Valleys also represents a first step towards building corridors for the transport of green molecules that place Italy at the centre of one of the hydrogen highways as outlined in RepowerEU,” he adds.

“Snam’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future is one of the cornerstones of our 2022–26 strategic plan, where we have allocated €1bn to build a platform dedicated to decarbonisation.”
