ExxonMobil to store CO₂ from Linde blue hydrogen complex

ExxonMobil has agreed to transport and permanently store up to 2.2mn t/yr of CO₂ from industrial gases firm Linde’s blue hydrogen project in Beaumont, Texas.

Linde last month agreed hydrogen and nitrogen offtake with fertiliser giant OCI as feedstock for its 1.1mn t/yr ammonia facility. The industrial gases firm plans to build, own and operate an onsite complex including autothermal methane reforming and air separation technology, estimated to cost $1.8bn. The project is due to start up in 2025.

“ExxonMobil’s agreement with Linde underscores our growing momentum in providing industrial customers with large-scale solutions to sequester carbon dioxide emissions,” says Dan Ammann, president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions.

ExxonMobil is developing a blue hydrogen plant with an integrated CCS network at its Baytown chemicals park, with FID expected next year. The oil major has indicated the CCS network could be made available to industrial emitters seeking to decarbonise.
