BP to explore Egypt’s green hydrogen potential

BP has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian government to assess the feasibility of developing a multi-phase, large-scale green hydrogen export hub in the country.

“BP is proud of our long history in Egypt and significant role in the country’s energy industry,” says Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, the company’s executive vice-president for gas and low-carbon energy. “Egypt has world-class renewable energy resources, and we look forward to working with the government to explore how we can support its ambitious low carbon strategy.”

Egypt has signed a number of hydrogen MoUs with international companies over the past year, and firmed eight of these into strategic framework agreements at the Cop27 conference last month.

Egypt also signed a strategic partnership on renewable hydrogen with the EU at Cop27, which aims to facilitate investment in the fuel while also establishing “mutually compatible regulatory frameworks” in compliance with European standards, definitions and rules for what qualifies as ‘renewable’ hydrogen.

In November, BP signed an MoU with the Mauritanian government to similarly explore commercial and technical feasibility of developing green hydrogen projects.
