Siemens wins first hydrogen train fleet order

German technology company Siemens has secured its first order for a fleet of hydrogen-powered trains.

It will supply seven of its two-car Mireo Plus H fuel-cell trains to Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn, which operates local passenger services on the RB27 network in the Berlin-Brandenburg region of Germany.

The trains, which will replace diesel-powered locomotives, are scheduled for delivery in autumn 2024 and are expected to be in operation by December of that year. The trains will run on locally produced green hydrogen.

“Today, travelling by train is by far the most climate-friendly way to travel. We are especially proud that our first order for a fleet of hydrogen-powered trains will also enable emission-free rail transport on non-electrified routes,” says Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility.

15 minutes – Refuelling time for Mireo Plus H train

“Our Mireo Plus H is a next-generation hydrogen train that combines innovation with sustainability. Thanks to its long range, faster acceleration, and state-of-the-art technologies, it will set new standards in zero-emission passenger transport.”

The Mireo Plus H has a fuel-cell drive system and a lithium-ion battery. It can be refuelled in 15 minutes, according to Siemens. Switching from diesel to hydrogen on the Niederbarnimer network will reduce CO₂ emissions by around 3,000t/yr and save 1.1mn l of diesel, it says. The order with Siemens includes a ten-year service and spare parts contract.
