Finland-based fuels company St1 Nordic and Norwegian renewables technology firm Horisont Energi have agreed jointly to explore the development of a green ammonia project in Finnmark county, northern Norway.
The project will produce green hydrogen via electrolysis powered by offshore wind capacity which St1 plans to develop in the region. St1 has submitted a permit application for the development of an 800MW windfarm and has other offshore wind projects in the pipeline.
"We must couple the power sector with the end-use transport sectors like marine, aviation, and road freight transport,” Grant-Carlsen, St1 Norway.
The two companies also aim to explore several new and alternative green ammonia production technologies and the use of carbon capture and storage.
The project could tie in with plans by St1 to develop a commercial market for carbon removal credits.
“Decarbonisation of transport and industry is a massive challenge, and to solve it, we must couple the power sector with the end-use transport sectors like marine, aviation, and road freight transport, as well as industry. In addition, we are excited to further develop a commercial and regulated carbon marketplace for trading of carbon removal credits,” says Kristine Vergli Grant-Carlsen, CEO of St1 Norway.
Horisont Energi is already developing the Finnmark-based Barents Blue project, which would be Europe’s first large-scale blue ammonia production plant. The project would use natural gas from the Snohvit field, coupled with carbon capture and storage, to produce 3,000t/yr of clean ammonia per day from 2025. FID on the project is expected next year.
