Everfuel starts installing Europe’s biggest electrolyser

Danish renewables company Everfuel has started construction of a 20MW electrolyser adjacent to the Fredericia refinery in the central Jutland area of Denmark after receiving final building permits.

The electrolyser forms phase one of the HySynergy project and will be the largest in Europe when it comes online in mid-2022, according to Everfuel.

The facility, powered by renewable energy, will have a production capacity of about 8t/d of green hydrogen and will have 10t of storage capacity.

Phase two of the HySynergy project will see the development of a 300MW electrolyser and power-to-X facility, also adjacent to the 68,000bl/d Fredericia refinery, which Shell sold to private investment company Postlane Partners earlier this year as part of its exit from the Danish downstream sector.

“Starting construction of the largest electrolyser in Europe is a significant step for Everfuel, but our ambitions are much beyond the 20MW electrolyser in Phase I, as we are already now advanced in the planning of 300MW in Phase II,” says Jacob Krogsgaard, Everfuel CEO.

Green hydrogen produced by the new electrolysers will be used as feedstock for the refinery as well as directly for mobility applications. The new facility can also provide oxygen for onsite carbon capture by an oxyfuel process. It is expected to achieve a 25pc reduction of the refinery’s emissions by using the green hydrogen for production of gasoline, diesel, DME and M85, Everfuel says.
