Hydrogen Economist looks at the new hydrogen projects added to our database and the progress made on existing developments

Thirteen new projects were added to our database this week and updates provided for four existing developments, primarily across blue and green hydrogen.

Of the new projects, six are in Europe (Albania, France, Italy and the UK), three in Asia-Pacific (Australia, India and South Korea), two in Central & South America (Chile and Uruguay), one in North America (US) and one in Africa (Morocco).

In South Korea, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Saudi Aramco for research and development on blue hydrogen and ammonia projects. The Seosan Blue Hydrogen Project will involve the production of blue hydrogen at the Hyundai Oilbank refinery using LPG imported from Saudi Aramco, with the subsequent CO2 captured and stored during the process and transported back to Aramco. This would then be used for enhanced oil recovery. Blue hydrogen would also be sold back to Saudi Aramco for multiple uses, as well as being used in South Korea in hydrogen vehicle fuelling stations. HHI’s shipbuilding division will develop the world’s first ship able to carry LPG and captured CO2 as part of the cooperation agreement.

In Uruguay, the Ministry of Industry, Energy & Mining, state oil company Ancap and state utility UTE are working jointly on the Verne Project. This will act as a pilot for the production of green hydrogen using polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysers and its use in fuel-cell heavy duty vehicles, including trucks and passenger buses. The aim is to scale up the use of hydrogen in the transportation sector to include trucks and buses as well as freight trains, ferries and barges.

In Canada, Evolugen and Gazifere are progressing with the development of an approximately 20MW water electrolysis hydrogen production facility in Quebec. The Gatineau Green Hydrogen Project will be built next to to Evolugen’s hydroelectric facility, which will power the electrolyser. An estimated 425,000GJ of green hydrogen will be produced for injection into Gazifere’s natural gas distribution network, while avoiding approximately 15,000t/yr in greenhouse gas emissions.
